The Novogen MMX Bioprinter® prints fully human, architecturally correct 3D tissue in a variety of different formats, in this particular case into multi–well plates. Bio–ink or hydrogel can be dispensed from each of two print heads.

Left: A histological stain of bioprinted human liver tissue showing hepatocytes, hepatic stellate, and endothelial cells in an organized structure with the cell density and tight junctions of that found in native tissue. Right: Bioprinted human liver tissue in 3 dimensions.

Areas where printed living tissues could be used are expanding fast. One promising area is to create diseased tissues for research purposes. Having life–like disease models outside the body that behave like disease inside the body opens entirely new research avenues into the mechanisms of disease. These potential discoveries may fundamentally change how we target and design treatments, and how treatments may someday be personalized to an individual’s phenotypic expression of a specific disease.
